Become a Paranoid Blogging Narcissist... in 3 EASY Steps!

One of the interesting dynamics about Active Rain is that it is a COMMUNITY of bloggers. Daily thousands of people log-on to read and learn from and of each other.

However while your blog informs, it might also inspire and/or provoke another blogger to write more. That "MORE" might be more about what your had to say in your blog, or about you personally and specifically in their own personal blog. Either way, they might make mention of or reference YOU, by name.

With so much blogging activity, how will you know if or when one of your fellow bloggers ARE saying something behind the front of your back here in the Rain?

Well it takes only 3 EASY steps to KEEP TABS ON YOURSELF in the Rain.

First...  Select "SEARCH" on the upper right hand menu bar.

Second...Once on the SEARCH screen, select "BLOGS" from the drop down menu.

Third... Type in your name then hit "SEARCH"

Once you hit "SEARCH" If you have been mentioned in a blog, a list of all the blogs will appear.

Knowing when and what others have to say about you here in the rain will help you:

  • 1. Thank the blogger.
  • 2. Know how someone has represented (or misrepresented) you.
  • 3. If you need to, defend your point of view.
  • 4. If you want to, expand on what you had to say.

Now that you know how to find what others have to say about you, there is just one more thing you might want to consider. Since we all do not have one word names like Cher, Oprah, Sting or TLW... it would be polite to use a persons COMPLETE name (first & last name) when mentioning them in your blog.

Well that's it... now you know how afraid I am as I watch myself in the Rain.

Craig, thanks for the reminder.  I did this only once and I don't generally tick people off but I'm going to go search myself right now!

Hi, Craig!  I know I've mentioned you before, and you've found me!  :o)  Someone told me to search my name once and be surprised.  I did, and I was!  I was mentioned before I ever blogged.  Weird to find stuff like that.  I hope some others find a nice surprise for themselves after reading this!

never thought of that

I usually figure I know who is giving me link love...and I make it a point to send a link to anyone I quote or mention in a post... but I'm sure there are some sneaky sneakies out there who have something to say but don't shout it from the rooftops!

This is just what I didn't need another thing to think about....but I am glad you brought it up.  I try not to provoke anything but thought, which this did!  I usually have big shoulders but I like to know who's watching and saying what....that's just being me.  Now I will have to make a habit of once a week checking to see if I need to thank someone for not using my name!

Great Post.

OK, how blonde is Dena? If googled myself, technorati'ed myself but I've never checked Active Rain. Boy a bunch of people have said some nice stuff about me ~ and I never noticed! And the funny thing is I've checked for other people but not myself!

Craig

Good suggestion.  I'm aware of the functionality of AR'S internal search engine, but always forget to run it like a Technorati search.   Thanks.

Craig - I tried it, and found you can also select Blog Comments from the dropdown at Search.

Is there a way to search for your name but eliminate your own posts?

I haven't searched for myself, but I have searched on topics and been amazed at how two people have written the exact same content?!?  Interesting!  Sherry

Nice idea.  I kind of have to do that on the internet but don't do it on Active rain.  Should I care what people say or write?
Posted by Teresa Boardman (Boardman Realty) over 13 years ago
Hi, I never thought of searching for myself!  I have only used Search to see if someone has already posted a blog about something....Very clever!  Thanks for sharing this.

I also use "google alerts" it keeps you informed not only about Active Rain, but all over the Internet and it's free.

Hi Craig,

I use Google Alerts as well. I also did this very thing just last night.  I was very pleased that I did, I was able to help welcome a brand new blogger to the community and I was reminded that I had been totally remiss in responding to a post that happened on the very first day I was on AR.

I think it can be fun to find out what is being said about you when you aren't in the room.  Of course, it can also be hurtful depending upon what was said and why they said it.  Fortunately, I have not experienced the hurtful part here, but I did once go trolling through the net at large and I found posts from folks that had said one thing here and something quite different out there.  Still, not really of the truly hurtful variety and I decided that if I had kept my nose out of it and minded my own business, there would be nothing to fear and I would not risk being hurt (or, more accurately, hurting myself).

Thank you for showing others how this is done.

Take care,

Tisza

Craig-Just like the others, I have google alerts also.  I had no idea about google alerts but someone here on AR wrote a post about it and so I signed up.  Now I receive daily emails with the updates.  I dont beleive anyone would be bold enough (or stupid enough) to post someones name in a negative way on this site.  Or would they?

Craig, you have me worried...I'm sure I used your entire name but I best go and check...

Craig, back again. Thank heavens I did have your entire name...Kudoos for me. However, I checked with the search and found so many blogs that I had missed and thank you's were in order. So, thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Never thought of doing that.  I'll have to do some homework and see what is being said, hopefully nothing.  It sounds like that Google alert thing is also a great tool.

Craig, You made my day.  I did a search for myself and was pleasantly surprised.

It was really nice to see that I was cited in several posts.  I get more joy out of someone referring to a post I wrote than getting a post of mine featured.  It means that I wrote something that stuck with that person.  I'm actually in their thoughts. The power of the written word is incredible.  I'm now inspired to write more.

Oh No. Another way to check up on myself! Not sure this is such a good thing. I spend more time "looking in the mirror" than I do writing!
Posted by Lisa Dunn, www.TwinCitySeller.com (Edina Realty) over 13 years ago

Craig..... how funny... afraid of what?  lol   And what Tim Maitski wrote above.... was because he found one of my blogs that I mentioned his name. This is what he said.... "I did a search for my name as Craig Schiller suggested in his post today and found this post."

In any case....   this is a great idea. I have typed my name in Google, but I never thought about doing it on here.  thanks for the tip.
