1 Golden Rule and a bunch of Lemmings

One of the things that attracted me to Active Rain is the way ideas flow freely back and forth.

There is room and need for a variety of opinions on MANY subjects here. Disagreement is the fertile ground for growth. Let's face it, if we all just "Lemming-ed" our way through life, we would all without question go over that big cliff.

Quite often people hold on to their opinions as if they are GOLD. But here on Active Rain I believe that the real GOLD is the open dialogue and understanding gained from it. The real Gold can be found as each of us as individuals chooses to apply, adapt, tweak, use, alter, integrate, or reject what they have learned from what has been shared here in the rain.

Disagrement with an idea/concept/approach/individual need not be disrespectful. The end result may be that you just agree to disagree.

These 12 expressions of 1 Golden Rule reminds us that we all can have varying approaches to our faith, our professions, our lives, and our opinions... but when it comes to relating to each other, one concept rises above all others. Following this 1 Golden Rule is the one place being a Lemming actually makes sense.

PS: I created these (using Active Rain Colors) for the free use of all.

Very nicely done Craig. The world would be a better place no doubt if all would practice these beliefs.

Amen...

Good morning Craig, Very good post. I love heated debates and conflicts of opinions. It's how I learn. But always debate the topic not the person. As soon as it gets personal, you lose.

The "golden rule" has been around as long as humanity has existed. What does that tell us?

Hi Craig,

You’re the fellow Jay refers to as “Clown,” right? Some Clown, indeed! What a thoughtful, insightful post. I particularly like the quote from the Torah: “What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour. This is the whole Torah; all the rest is commentary. Go and learn it.” (Emphasis mine.)

It’s a shame that so much is done by humanity in the name of religion that defies the wisdom taught by the ancients.

Top "O" the Morning to ya Craig! This is perhaps one of the best posts I've read in a while. How absoultely BORING if we all shared the exact same thoughts or opinions! We can agree to disagree, but with civility and respect. One of our primary goals in our posts should be to stimulate thought and debate. Thanks, Craig!

You came up with some religions I had never heard of.  Chicago, the center of all, must have a temple for each one.  I had to go back and check for Baha'i.  Yes, it's there.  Even Islam, the now much maligned faith is there.  "This is the whole Torah" is reflected in Jesus answer to the Pharisees about the great commandment.  His first answer was "love the Lord God" and the second is like unto the first: "Love your neighbor as yourself".  When we all accomplish this commandment from each of our respective faiths, the world will be a better place.

Now, what program do you use to create the buttons?

;-D

Wow.... whoda thought?????  Maybe He had something there, hmm??       =-D

Fantastic point indeed, one I try best to live by.  Oddly, why is this so hard for some to remember when it is such a simple message?

Thank you for addressing this point so beautifully and in a way that all can understand and relate to.  Emotions can be such a handicap at times...we can get caught up so easily and lose our cool.  Sometimes it's best to wait a day or so before responding to a heated debate.  That way we lose that 'edge' of anger and are more in control of the words that we choose and the way that we address the subject.

Jay: How true. I know I need to be reminded OFTEN too.  I figured if I could use a refresher course. So could others.

Bryant: I like "the topic not the person" THAT keeps it quite clear what we are doing here.

Dena:I have been taking Carnac classes from Linda Davis.

Charles: TLW did her own spin on this awhile back. I just thought THIS week it would be good to hear it again. I wish once it was said we would get it. But that seems not to be the case. So posting this message again surely won't hurt.

Chris:OK... YOU know about KUNG FU? You do NOT look that old!

Medford: How often I sit in church (full of the spirit) and pray that I take that feeling with me into my life during the course of a week. It is hard at times for sure. Thank God we do have this wisdom... when we need it, remember it, and apply it.

Rich: I am sorry I just can't agree with you. (Nudge Nudge Wink Wink :-) )

Bonnie:Believe it our not I do MOST of my creative graphic design in MS Word.  Then I convert it into a jpg. (I make MS Word do things that would make Microsoft's developers head spin.) Oh and I found most of the little symbols in Microsofts image library!

Janice: Just the fact that you are working on it is a great example for your daughters to see.

Alexander: That is the cool thing about pure TRUTH, it just IS. It IS no matter who says it, where they say it, or when it is said. AND it needs not be owned or assigned it lives because it IS.

Tina: Simple yet hard... God ain't that the truth.

Val: We need to keep this message in front us Stagers as we move this industry forward. Being it is so young... there will be and needs to be much dialogue. We MUST remain sane.

Thanks all.. Me

Craig, what I learned from this post was in all religions - Treat others like you want to be treated.  We all want love, respect and honesty!  I think that is all we can ask for.  I hope the dark clouds subside and PEACE will reign supreme in the RAIN!

Thanks again, Craig for another wonderful post that creates thought and dialogue about important, fundamental things.

...and I love the statement that Bryant made also "But always debate the topic not the person"...excellent advice to protect other people's feelings and dignity.

...and also Val's advice about waiting to respond if we are angry. When you write in anger, it does it's damage over and over again, since its hurtfulness is preserved so explicity...and when you do it on a public forum such as this, that affect is multiplied.

Craig, you have an amazing heart, and I'm (we're) very thankful that you are such a big part of AR. We need you!

What a beautiful post Craig, I consider myslelf duly reprimanded ;)

Edited to add***  I don't want anyone to think that the above comment had anything to do with any of the major drama last week.  This was just in reference to a sarcastic comment I made jokingly (as is my nature for those who know me) on another stager's blog and was not taken kindly.  I regret that it is often hard to guage the flavor of someone's remark over this medium.

I wish all these religions could practice the tolerance and fair treatment they preach...

Benito Juarez one of the best Mexican presidents....(actually, maybe the only good one ever) once said "Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace."

My rendition of this wise saying is: "Among individuals, as among nations, the respect for the right of others is the preservation of your teeth"

MANY MANY MANY thanks Craig!
